Rocketman 4K Ultra HD Review

ROCKETMAN 4K ULTRA HD REVIEW

STORY

An epic musical fantasy about the uncensored human story of Sir Elton John’s breakthrough years.

REVIEW

I'll be the first to admit that I am not a huge fan of musicals, especially the ones that break out into musical numbers and then resume a scene as if nothing happened. So when I heard that Rocketman had those types of scenes, I was already a bit apprehensive about enjoying. I'm going to proudly eat crow and let you know that Rocketman is easily one of my favorite movies of the year.

This movie has a story that a lot of us are familiar with and I'm not directly referring to Elton John's story, but more of a rock star and his rise to fame and the troubles that come with it. Rocketman does not hold anything back and I really appreciated that. It shows the highs and the extremely low lows. We've heard that fame comes with a price and sometimes that price can almost cost you your life. I don't like spoiling movies, so I won't get into the details. I guess I was just pleasantly surprised with how open this movie was. Especially after Bohemian Rhapsody received some criticism for overlooking some aspects of the the story. Rocketman does not have the same issues.

Now, onto the cream of the crop. What makes Rocketman one of my favorite movies of the year is the performance of Taron Egerton. His charisma and enthusiasm for the role just pop off the screen. I'm not a huge Elton John fan but I've obviously seen clips of his performances and how flamboyant he was, so when Taron Egerton was casted I wasn't completely sold on it. Once again, I was wrong. What is even more impressive is that Egerton actually did his own singing and he actually gave it his own flair. Do yourself a favor and look up his live performances on YouTube, the man is super talented. This felt like a career defining role for Egerton and I hope he receives the recognition he deserves.

You do get your performance scenes and they all look amazing. I know there are plenty of videos out there that do side by side comparisons on music videos that were recreated and you can only respect the time and dedication that went into those scenes. For those who are fans of the music and performances, you will not be disappointed.

VIDEO

Rocketman is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Paramount Pictures with a 2160p transfer in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. There are a ton of vivid colors that popped off the screen in this movie and most of them come from Elton John's wardrobe. It's been a while since I've seen a 4K presentation that was as saturated and rich as this one, and that I mean that in a good way. Finer details are also noticed, from wardrobe textures to aging characters.

AUDIO

The 4K disc comes with a Dolby Atmos mix that does a superb job of bringing the musical sequences to life. I was not disappointed by any of the performances as far as sound goes. Everything from the dialogue to the environment in the more mundane scenes sounded clear and natural.

ARROW FILMS is pleased to make available the International trailer for THE DEAD CENTER, the brand-new thriller from “a masterful new voice in terror” (Nerdist), Billy Senese, director of the acclaimedA Frankenstein Story. Helmed by genre stalwart Shane Carruth, the creator of Primer and Upstream Color, THE DEAD CENTER is a unique tale of existential terror that explores the demons that live inside of all of us. The film features exceptional supporting performances from Jeremy Childs (Preacher) and Poorna Jagannathan (Big Little Lies).

In further news, ARROW FILMS is also delighted to announce that they have acquired world-wide rights to the film. Fran Simeoni, Arrow’s Director of Content and Distribution, had this to say:

“We have had a fantastic experience working on THE DEAD CENTER with Billy, from the trade and critical response to fans and our own enjoyment of building the campaign and assets. It’s always a gift to be able to work on films you enjoy and that offer so many opportunities and this has been a pleasure to do so in collaboration with Billy. To extend our investment on the film to a global level was the next logical step and we look forward to bringing the film to more audiences.”

Director / Producer Billy Senese adds:

“My relationship with Arrow began with them acquiring the rights to my film, THE DEAD CENTER, in a few of the larger territories. But as we worked closely together on the release, I knew I was in the right place. It was a natural transition to lock in a worldwide deal with them. They’ve shown a true investment in my film. Not only with the money side of things, but with their time and care. They are curators. As a filmmaker, this is very important to me. Being with Arrow has been a great partnership, and I look forward to our upcoming release."

SYNOPSIS

WHEN JOHN DOE ROSE FROM THE DEAD, HE BROUGHT SOMETHING BACK.

When a very dead suicide victim (Jeremy Childs, Preacher, Nashville) disappears from the morgue, it sets in motion a chain of events that has the power to immolate everything, and everyone, it touches.

Troubled psychiatrist Daniel Forrester (Shane Carruth, Primer, Upstream Color) is drawn to help a mysterious patient who is brought to the emergency psych ward in a catatonic state with no memory of how he reached the hospital. As if to exorcise his own demons, the doctor feverishly tries to break through to his mysterious patient. But as a spate of mysterious deaths shake the ward to its core, Forrester comes to suspect that there is more to his new ward than meets the eye. As he comes to realize what he’s unleashed, a desperate race against the forces of evil threatens to swallow him whole.

The Dead Center is a smart supernatural thriller that explores the demons that live inside all of us from writer-director Billy Senese, recently hailed as a “masterful new voice in terror” (Nerdist).

4K Ultra HD Combo October 29, 2019

Also Available in 2-Disc Blu-ray with Newly Remastered Black-and-White Film, Along with Colorized Version

Return to Bedford Falls to experience the life-affirming message of director Frank Capra’s enduringly popular classic all over again when IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time ever October 29, 2019.  Fully restored from the original negative IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE in 4K delivers amazing clarity with sharper and brighter images for a sensational home viewing experience.

Paramount spent over a year painstakingly restoring this treasured film, using the original nitrate negative along with two fine grain masters made in the 1940s.  Each element was carefully scanned using the very latest technology to both preserve the delicate negative and create the best possible digital image.  Fortunately, 13 of the 14 reels of the original negative survived, but portions had begun to deteriorate so the best image was selected from one of the three original sources on a shot-by-shot basis.  The result is a more vibrant and detail-rich picture that brings this classic to life like never before.

The 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack includes the black-and-white film in 4K high definition, as well as a colorized version on Blu-ray, along with three special features new to 4K Ultra HD disc: “Restoring a Beloved Classic,” “Secrets from the Vault,” and “It’s A Wonderful Wrap Party.”  A 2-Disc Blu-ray set will also be available that includes the newly remastered film in black-and-white, along with a colorized version and the three special features listed above.
