Story

 New England, 1630: William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life with their five children, homesteading on the edge of an impassible wilderness. When their newborn son mysteriously vanishes and their crops fail, the family beings to turn on one another. The Witch is a chilling portrait of a family unraveling within their own fears and anxieties, leaving them prey to an inescapable evil.

Review

The Witch of course is film that hes been out for a few years now and to me it still remains of my favorite horror movies of the last few years. I know some people will argue that it is not a true horror film, whatever that even means. This is one of those films that will leave you thinking about it days after you have watched it. I do not want to go too much into the plot because it is pretty simple but I would put it as more of a psychological horror film. It really messed with me and there are scenes in this movie that have stuck with me even years later.

This is first performance I ever watched from Anya Taylor-Joy and she was phenomenal. Her emotions and her facial expressions were all on point and if there is anyone that you're going to relate to in this movie then it is most likely going to be her. 

It is important to note that this movie is set in 1630 and of course the family is living a super strict Christian life and that has them more on edge about certain things that maybe we're more used to now. It was one of those viewing experiences that had me really tense through out and had me wanting to yell at the screen.

I know I'm being very vague but I am doing that because I am sure most of you reading this have already watched this film and are looking to upgrade your copy but also because there are those of you who have not watched it and I don't want to give anything away.

Listen, if you enjoyed Hereditary, this film is for you. That simple. If you're a fan of horror and maybe want something a bit different from the usual slashers and demonic urban hauntings, then The Witch is well worth your time. Seriously, go watch it.

The Witch is presented in 2160p Ultra HD in a 1.66:1 aspect ratio. What that means for most of you is that there will be some thin black bars on the sides of the screen instead of the usual top and bottom bars. The Witch to begin with is a film that doesn't require a super high resolution or the capability to show extreme contrast between colors for it to be enjoyed, so I was definitely looking forward to seeing how good it looked in 4K. I can say that there was definitely a benefit, especially from the HDR. The majority of this film has a tone where it is almost washed out, like a slight white overlay over the entire thing. It does add to the setting and definitely makes the film better. The addition of the HDR just lets us see more of that environment, especially in some of the darker scenes. The daylight scenes really popped off screen and also benefited from this transfer. Honestly I would say that The Witch is worth upgrading if you're a fan of the film or want to see how 4K looks on a less than traditional looking film.

Audio

The audio is presented with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master mix that doesn't have much to it as far as something that will blow you away. There are a lot of sounds from the environment in this movie but more than anything it has a very haunting soundtrack. That to me is a very important aspect to any horror movie but more so with a film like The Witch that relies a lot on its setting to add to the environment and overall sense of dread that you feel while watching it.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The Witch is a very disturbing and unsettling horror film that will stick with you long after you're done watching it. If you're looking to expand your horror collection or just looking to beef up that 4K collection, The Witch is a worthy addition.

Picking up one week after the emergency response team stormed Litchfield Penitentiary, the ladies of Litch have been torn apart, literally and figuratively, as they enter a new facility in the sixth season of “Orange Is The New Black.” Now ​newbies ​starting at the bottom, they ​must navigate new rules and power dynamics while getting hazed by inmates and tortured by guards.
