Child's Play (2019) Blu-ray Review

Child's Play (2019) Blu-ray Review

Story

Realizing that her son Andy (Gabriel Bateman) is lonely, Karen (Aubrey Plaza) buys him a seemingly innocent, AI-enhanced doll named Chucky. But Chucky’s safety restrictions have been disabled, and soon, a gruesome series of events unfolds. Unable to convince his mom that the doll is responsible for the carnage, Andy becomes the target of the blood thirsty Chucky!

Review

I know a few people took issue with the design of Chucky for this new film but honestly I didn't even notice too much after the movie settled in. This movie does use the evolution of technology to make Chucky much more sinister and dangerous this time around and I thought it was quite effective. If you're worried about the new school look of this Chucky, don't be, he's much more capable this time around to make up for it.

It did give me a lot of joy hearing Mark Hamill voicing Chucky, he was definitely that best part of this version of Chucky. Aubrey Plaza was also a pleasant surprise, I wasn't sure what to expect from Plaza with her trademark deadpan humor but she really fit well with the tone of this movie. Performances were solid all around.

The relationship that Andy had with Chucky felt a bit more realistic and believable this time around, Andy really came across as an outsider that was trying to find his place. My only negative takeaway from this relationship was that Andy was older than I expected but they counteracted this by making Chucky like so many other devices that teenagers like having around. This of course did make for some interesting scenes, especially when Andy starts king friends.

For those of you that love those gory scenes and over the top kills, you will not be disappointed. Maybe this Chucky doesn't look as menacing as older versions but the viciousness is all the same. Nothing is off limits as a weapon for Chucky here, his wireless capabilities give him access to almost any device.

This new iteration of Child's Play really does not follow the formula of the original, it definitely is more fitting in this modern era. I thoroughly enjoyed this new Child's Play and I think it is well worth a watch for any fans of the franchise.

Video

Child's Play is presented with a 1080p presentation in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. This Blu-ray is one of my favorite dark presentations of the year. What I mean by that is that the majority of this movie is really dark, plenty of night time scenes that had great contrast and were not hard to watch. Anything from fabric textures to worn concrete looked sharp and exceeded my expectations from a Blu-ray presentation.

Audio

Child’s Play has a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track that delivers a quality presentation. The dialogue in this track was clear and not lost in the background at all. Environmental scenes were mixed well, especially a chaotic sequence near the end of the movie. While this audio track might not be something to write home about, it does not take away from the movie.

Extras

  • The Making of Child’s Play
  • Bringing Child’s Play’s Chucky to Life
  • Soundtrack Trailer
  • Toy Massacre
  • A.I. Mayhem
  • Gallery

 Languages

  • English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and Descriptive Audio 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1

Final Thoughts

Child's Play is a solid horror movie and a welcome addition to the franchise. It does enough to separate itself from previous films and sets up an interesting sequel if it happens.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix Blu-ray Review

X-Men: Dark Phoenix Blu-ray Review

Story

Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all of humanity.

Review

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is another go at the same story line centered around Jean Grey that we got in X-Men: The Last Stand. A film that was all but erased by some events that took place in Days of Future Past. Dark Phoenix is at its best when we get to see these heroes in action. There are plenty of set pieces here that deliver great action and gave me exactly what I wanted. What I wanted was more scenes building the relationships between these characters. There are some but not anywhere near as effective as I would have wanted for a film that is based around a story that pits family against family. I know this series is more than capable of delivering that type of story because Logan did it better than any other X-Men film before it. Not to mention we've seen these characters grow over a few films by now. Dark Phoenix might be disappointing when compared to the series highs of X2 and Days of Future Past but overall the strong cast really carries this film along with strong action scenes.

Video

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is presented on Blu-ray with a 1080p transfer in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. As I mentioned before, Dark Phoenix has some awesome set pieces filled with great action. This Blu-ray transfer really popped off on my screen. I'm sure the 4K of this looks amazing but the Blu-ray presentation cannot be far behind. Some of the CGI does falter when compared to other CGI that is used throughout the film. Aside from these scenes the rest of the movie looked quite sharp and there were no issues I noticed through multiple viewings.

Audio

This Blu-ray Disc features a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track that sounded great on my system. I was really looking forward to the audio presentation because Hans Zimmer handled the score for this film. This audio track is just as impressive as the video presentation. The action pieces felt as alive as I expected, the dialogue was a bit low during some scenes but some minor adjustments on my end made that a nonissue.

Final Thoughts

Perhaps not as strong as some of the films that came before it but X-Men: Dark Phoenix is worth watching for the performances and action sequences alone.

Universal City, California, September 17, 2019 – How bad can a sixth grader’s day really get? From creative masterminds Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (SuperbadPineapple ExpressSausage Party) comes the new hit comedy Good Boysavailable on Digital October 29, 2019, as well as Blu-rayTM, DVD and On Demand on November 12, 2019. Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes as the biggest original comedy opening of the year, the movie is making audiences laugh out loud with its perfect mix of side-splitting adult humor and oblivious-yet-loveable trio of grade-school friends. Described as “a highly original coming-of-age tale,” (Katie Walsh, Chicago Tribune), Good Boys is loaded with outrageous unrated exclusive bonus content including a never-before-seen alternate ending and deleted and extended scenes as well as featurettes with the cast and crew, treating audiences to some gut-busting behind-the-scenes moments.

Eager for some pointers, Max and his best friends Thor (Brady Noon, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire) and Lucas (Keith L. Williams, Fox’s The Last Man On Earth) decide to use Max’s dad’s drone – which Max is forbidden to touch – to spy on a teenage couple making out next door. But when things go ridiculously wrong, the drone is destroyed. Desperate to replace it before Max’s dad (Will Forte, The Last Man on Earth) gets home, the boys skip school and set off on an odyssey of epically bad decisions involving some accidentally stolen drugs, frat-house paintball, and running from both the cops and two terrifying teenage girls (Molly Gordon; Life of the Party and Midori Francis; Ocean’s Eight).

From Point Grey producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the writers of SuperbadPineapple Express and Sausage Party, and James Weaver (Neighbors), Good Boys is co-written and produced by Lee Eisenberg and co-written and directed by Gene Stupnitsky (NBC’s The Office).
