X-Men: Dark Phoenix Blu-ray Review

X-Men: Dark Phoenix Blu-ray Review

Story

Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all of humanity.

Review

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is another go at the same story line centered around Jean Grey that we got in X-Men: The Last Stand. A film that was all but erased by some events that took place in Days of Future Past. Dark Phoenix is at its best when we get to see these heroes in action. There are plenty of set pieces here that deliver great action and gave me exactly what I wanted. What I wanted was more scenes building the relationships between these characters. There are some but not anywhere near as effective as I would have wanted for a film that is based around a story that pits family against family. I know this series is more than capable of delivering that type of story because Logan did it better than any other X-Men film before it. Not to mention we've seen these characters grow over a few films by now. Dark Phoenix might be disappointing when compared to the series highs of X2 and Days of Future Past but overall the strong cast really carries this film along with strong action scenes.

Video

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is presented on Blu-ray with a 1080p transfer in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. As I mentioned before, Dark Phoenix has some awesome set pieces filled with great action. This Blu-ray transfer really popped off on my screen. I'm sure the 4K of this looks amazing but the Blu-ray presentation cannot be far behind. Some of the CGI does falter when compared to other CGI that is used throughout the film. Aside from these scenes the rest of the movie looked quite sharp and there were no issues I noticed through multiple viewings.

Audio

This Blu-ray Disc features a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track that sounded great on my system. I was really looking forward to the audio presentation because Hans Zimmer handled the score for this film. This audio track is just as impressive as the video presentation. The action pieces felt as alive as I expected, the dialogue was a bit low during some scenes but some minor adjustments on my end made that a nonissue.

Final Thoughts

Perhaps not as strong as some of the films that came before it but X-Men: Dark Phoenix is worth watching for the performances and action sequences alone.
