Story

In the year 2019, a plague has transformed almost every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind

Review

Daybreakers has a super interesting plot that I am surprised has not garnered much interest from major studios almost 10 years later. This movie is at its best when the world building is front and center, how would a world look if the majority of the population turned to vampires? Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe round out a talented cast that all deliver sublime performances. For a movie that was made around a decade ago, it does hold up well. This one will definitely please those of you that enjoy gory vampire movies.  Although there are some minor plot holes, Daybreakers is worth the ride if you're willing to let it get away with a few things. 

Audio

The 4K disc is supported with a Dolby Atmos track that makes the most of the environments presented in this movie. Anything from snarling vampires to rapid gunfire sounded crisp and clear. No noticeable issues in deciphering dialogue from background sounds. 

Video

Daybreakers is presented in 4K UHD with a 2160p transfer in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. This movie has a very notable tone across the film. A darker tone that I've seen with other vampire films. As for the picture itself, I found very little issues if any. There are some signs of grain but nothing that took me out of the movie, the biggest detriment to this video presentation is the dated CGI effects but then again, it is not bad for being a decade old. The HDR does help since this is a dark film that does offer contrast from full on daylight to night time. Overall a solid 4K upgrade.

Final Thoughts

Daybreakers is a strong vampire film, it presents some interesting ideas that I hope get further explored in the future. As Halloween nears, this is not a film you want to keep out of your horror movie marathons.
