This breakneck thriller teams over half a dozen of the world’s biggest action stars for the martial arts film event of the year. Review
Triple Threat caught my eye as soon as I saw that both Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais were in the cast. Iko Uswais has been in some of my all time favorite action movies and Tony Jaa always delivers exceptional action movies as far as I'm concerned. You add in Michael Jai White who has become the go to guy for movies like this and throw in retired UFC fighter Michael Bisping to deliver some of his patented charisma and you got a loaded action movie cast. I knew right away that this movie would have amazing fight choreography if not much else and I was not wrong.
Honestly the plot is pretty thin but you don't watch these movies for a complicated story line, you're watching for the top notch fight scenes. Triple Threat delivers plenty of that and what actually surprised me was how violent it got in certain scenes. There is one scene in particular that still sticks out in my mind even days later that involves a grenade launcher and that is all I'm going to say about it. For those of you who are here for the action and the gunfights, you will not be disappointed.
The performances are pretty bland and there is a serious lack of character development. There are a few scenes here that felt unnecessary only because the dialogue just didn't work for me. Unfortunately for this story to resonate with us on an emotional level it really did need some great dialogue and character development. We do get some super cheesy lines that we've come to expect in action films through the years and I'm happy to report that none of them felt out of place.
The cinematography was actually a lot better than I was expecting. The opening of this movie takes place in the jungle and it took me back to watching Predator as a kid, the green of the forest served as a great backdrop and looked amazing on screen. Of course the camera work in most of the action scenes was satisfying and I never felt like I was missing any of the action.

I mentioned the opening scene taking place in the jungle and honestly it was probably the best looking part of this movie. The green just popped out and looked amazing. The rest of the movie looked good and there are no visual issues to speak of. A lot of movies of this genre usually have a noticeable color pallet and this is no exception, that is not a knock on this movie. I only mention that because other films can be wildly inconsistent with the tones but this one does not suffer from that issue.
Audio
The audio was clean and all the gunfights were mixed well enough to where I could decipher between different gun types and where the bullets were coming from. The fight scenes were extremely satisfying and every punch and kick landed with a solid thud. City scenes had everything you could expect from the sounds of passing cars to bar patrons chatting it up. This blu-ray had zero noticeable issues on the audio end from what I heard.

I hadn't watched Ghosts of Mars for years, I believe I was around 13 years old the last time I actually watched it. I would be lying if I said I remembered much of it so I was looking forward to watching it again after such a long time.
We start off with Melanie Ballard, a police lieutenant on Mars that is sent to a remote region with her squad to apprehend the dangerous criminal, Jame's "Desolation" Williams. What is supposed to be a simple operation turns into much more when martian spirits begin to take over human bodies.
The story itself sounds quite simple and that's because it is. There is not much to digest. That to me is both a positive and a negative. A positive because it lets you just enjoy the movie without thinking too much about what you are watching but a negative because it does leave the viewer with a lot of questions and we all know that all leads to us discovering plot holes. Honestly this did not bother me one bit, I found myself enjoying the cheesy lines and watching a jacked Ice Cube kick some ass.
The only thing that Ghosts of Mars suffers from is that it was made back in 2001 and it shows. You can either nitpick and gripe about the lack of production quality or you can choose to enjoy it and see how movies were made before a lot of CGI started to take over. I personally chose the latter. Something about early 2000 movies that I just love, it's when I first started to really enjoy watching movies so it holds a special place in my heart, as cliche as that sounds.
Ghosts of Mars is widely considered one of John Carpenter's weaker films but honestly I had a ton of fun with it. I found myself constantly remembering being a kid and skipping through cable channels and finally landing on some random movie on TNT or the SyFy channel. It took me back to going to Blockbuster on a Wednesday night to take advantage of rent one get one free and picking movies that had interesting covers. In this day and age, I like to enjoy whatever nostalgia I can get.
Video
I was a bit apprehensive the first time I popped this into my Xbox One S but I was then pleasantly surprised by how good the video quality was. I mentioned earlier that the production value on this film wasn't top tier and the superb video quality just allows that to come through a bit more. That is not a huge issue except for maybe a couple of scenes. The blacks look great which is a huge plus since it is draped all over the main characters. The Mars red that is present throughout also looks great. As expected with most older films of this quality there is some mild grain but nothing that would turn me away from purchasing this transfer. If you're looking for a video quality improvement over previous releases then I can safely tell you that there definitely is an upgrade.
Audio
The main track is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix and it does a great job. This film is like a thrill ride filled with action and a soundtrack full of hard hitting music just with a bit of your typical sounds that you expect from a John Carpenter film. All I can think off watching and listening to this movie is how great of an arcade game this would be.

Ghosts of Mars was a throwback ride that I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would. Whether you're looking to upgrade your current copy or looking for something to watch with a tub of popcorn, Ghosts of Mars is worth picking up!

Captain Marvel. The spectacular, 1990s-era Super Hero adventure, which electrified and inspired audiences worldwide and surpassed $1 billion in ticket sales, is available on Digital in HD and 4K Ultra HD™ and Movies Anywhere May 28, and lands on Blu-ray™ and Blu-ray 4K Ultra HD™ June 11.
Arriving home with extensive line-up of extras detailing the development of this highly anticipated addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), “Captain Marvel” includes Featurettes that highlight the transformative journey of Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and her character’s impact on audiences around the globe; the influence of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) on significant events within the MCU; the perfect pairing of directors Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck; the ongoing conflict between the Skrulls and the Kree; and the raw talent behind the fetching feline named Goose. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that introduces the MCU’s first stand-alone, female-franchise title character—Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. When we first meet Danvers, she already possesses her superhero powers, having left her earthly life behind and become a member of an intergalactic elite Kree military team called Starforce, led by their enigmatic commander, Yon-Rogg.
